COMMON QUESTIONS
How do I install Open Arkiv?
Open Arkiv is in public beta through Apple TestFlight. Install Apple's free TestFlight app from the App Store, then open our TestFlight invite (linked below) and tap Install. Updates arrive automatically — no sideloading or signing certificates required. A full App Store release will follow once review is complete.
What is the difference between Signed Mode and Whistleblower Mode?
Signed Mode attaches a cryptographic signature, GPS location, and timestamp so a report can be verified later — built for journalists. Whistleblower Mode attaches no identity or signature and routes traffic through the xx-network anonymity layer for maximum deniability.
Does Open Arkiv work without internet?
Yes. The core transport is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh that relays data device-to-device with no internet connection. Payloads hop between phones until they reach a beacon node that can anchor them on-chain.
What does on-chain anchoring do, and can I undo it?
Anchoring writes a record to the Arkiv DB-Chain to create a permanent, tamper-evident evidence trail. Anchoring is irreversible — it cannot be edited or deleted. Only anchor what you intend to make permanent.
Why does the app ask for Bluetooth and Location permissions?
Bluetooth is required to discover nearby devices and relay data across the mesh. Location is used only in Signed Mode, at the moment you create a signed record, to make the report verifiable. Whistleblower Mode never uses location.
Where are my keys stored?
Your cryptographic keys are generated and stored locally, protected by your device passkey or fingerprint (Face ID / Touch ID). They never leave your device.
